I have been blessed to experience God’s healing in my life in many ways.  This next story cracks me up every time I tell it.

About six months after being healed from Diverticulitis, I began having difficulty seeing.  I actually thought it was foggy everyday in Bend Oregon, where it is high dessert and there is no fog.  Each day, my sight was worse than the day before.  I began to feel it was not safe to drive and I could not read to my children at bedtime.  I decided I better make a appointment to see the eye doctor.  She discovered I had cataracts in both eyes.  She was puzzled and starting asking me a ton of questions about our crash, or if I had ever used steroids (which I hadn’t) I was only 38 years old and this severe of cataracts was very rare.  The doctor wanted to schedule me to have the first eye worked on right away, the other would be four weeks later.  We had plans to move back to San Diego in the next two months, and these surgeries were not in the plan. We began to pray and seek God for healing and wisdom concerning this.

First of all, we didn’t have the money or insurance.  We also did not know if we should wait and do the surgery in San Diego or in Bend.  As we prayed, the Lord showed us to go ahead and have the surgery in Bend.  We talked with the hospital, and they were willing to put us on a payment plan.  We borrowed $500.00 from Brew’s mom for a down payment, and would continue to make payments on the balance of $7500.00. Yikes!

I went in for the first surgery and it went well. However, it was really tough for me to get used to having one eye fixed, and the other all foggy and blurry.  It was a rough month of adjusting to the new lens and the glare I experienced each day.  We had the second eye surgery, and praise God all went well. One day, as we were packing and preparing to go back home to San Diego, I got a phone call from the hospital’s accounting department.  My daughter answered the phone and handed it to me.  “Is this Sheri Briggs that I am speaking to?” yes, I said.  “We have misplaced your financial agreement for your cataract surgeries.  Therefore, you will not be financially obligated to pay the hospital for your surgeries and aftercare, and we are sending you your $500.00 back.”  ‘WHAT?”  She repeated herself and said, “Just consider your new eyes a gift.” and she said good bye.  I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!  I hung up the phone cracking up at what the Lord had done.  My family came running in asking why I was laughing and crying at the same time.  I told them the story.  GOD HAD HEALED MY EYES THROUGH THE DOCTOR AND PAID THE BILL!!!! What a moment. Now my new eyes could see beautifully and clearly and with no debt involved!

In the Hebrew, YHWH (YAHWEH) means- I will be what I will be. I will be what is needed. Rapha means- To heal, to mend thoroughly, as to stitch.  HE IS OUR HEALER however He determines to do it!

  1. Hi Sheri – that is awesome!!

We took a vacation to the Bend area last month. We stayed in Prineville. What a great town and nice area. Although I am glad you were healed and financially forgiven at the hospital there, I plan to avoid it. My stepdad had a sponge left in him after heart surgery there!!! so I am a little skeptical…although is there more than one hospital?

When we arrived in Prineville, we found to our dismay we had made reservations for the following night onward! And it was rock show weekend! So we began our search and found a place down the road thankfully. I had this weird craving for ice cream (I don’t do so well with milk protein), and we had passed two places that my husband said no, we have to find a place to sleep first!

After we did, we went to the last place we had driven by, a local place that had an awesome rock countertop! We met a gal and her son there, and started talking. Turns out her son had the same congenital heart condition as me! (tetralogy of Fallot) She had just had a discouraging few weeks with doctor visits, and I was so thrilled the Lord invited me to share with her about my experience. I’m sure she was encouraged by the fact that I have made it to 52 in reasonably good shape. We asked if we could pray for her, and she said “I was hoping you’d ask! She felt the Lord had led us to her in her discouragement – so so cool! We had a great prayer time and she prayed for us too. It was really special. If we had gotten our motel, or if Grant had given in to my craving and stopped, we wouldn’t have found that ice cream place or gone at that time.

It felt especially good, since I feel like I have really been just on the receiving end of ministry for so long now. I have been “taken out” for a few years, and am still recovering from all the emotional trauma. Still praying for Grant and I to know what’s next.

Thanks for sharing your stories! I enjoy reading them!
