I opened my Bible to Psalm 77 the other day, and was completely blown away by a few words in the text. They grabbed a hold of my heart, and won’t let go.
The Psalm starts out with a man named Asaph crying out to God, seemingly desperate; stretching his hands up to heaven….but he remains troubled. So troubled he cannot sleep or speak the Bible says. He then remembers the worship songs he used to sing and asks God, “Would you really walk off and leave me forever my Lord? Has Your mercy ceased? Will your promises ever come true? Are you angry with me?

After he pours out his fears and doubts to the Lord, we read what Asaph chooses to do next….

He turns his anguish to remembering. He begins to speak to himself and tell himself what he is going to do about his troubled state, ” I could never forget all your miracles, my God. I shall remember all your wonders of old!”

Asaph chooses not just to remember, but to think about and meditate on God’s miracles. He began to talk about them and declare what he knows is true about God’s faithfulness. You can almost feel the change that happens in his spirit as he declares, “Who is so great a God as our God? You are the God who does wonders! Your display of miracles and power makes the nations acknowledge you!”

This decision to remember God’s miraculous interventions, brought Asaph to the story of the Red Sea. He rehearsed back to himself these words in vs 16-20.

The waters saw you, O God;
The waters saw You, they were afraid;
The depths also trembled.
The clouds poured out water;
The skies sent out a sound;
Your arrows also flashed about.
The voices of Your thunder was in the whirlwind;
The lightnings lit up the world;
The earth trembled and shook.
Your way was in the sea,
Your path in the great waters,
YET YOUR FOOTSTEPS WERE NOT SEEN.
You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Wow! Just picture this- Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth, stepping into the sea. Can you imagine? The waters were terrified. The depths rumbled and shook, while the skies turned dark. Flashes of lightning filled the sky, cracking violently while the rains began to fill the earth. The loud booming sounds of thunder. The earth trembling beneath His feet while the ocean floor cleared with each step!

All of Heaven and earth shouting and declaring His power and majesty yet…..

His footsteps were not seen.

Maybe you are feeling like Asaph…hurting and weary or feeling like God’s promises won’t come to pass. Maybe fear is shouting louder than anything else you can hear. Or possibly you are looking at what seems like a giant ocean between you and your promised land.

Turn your anguish to remembering and declare who He is and what He has done! Tell your friends, family…. maybe even a stranger.

When we hit a hard spot or a crisis of belief, I try to remember and say out loud, “We have seen too much and know too much to not believe God has this one too!”

His footsteps may not be seen….
But He is there. He’s with you.

And He is famous for making ways in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19
